Vol. 143 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Use of Dimming Devices.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is prepared to introduce proposals for legislation making it compulsory for motorists to use the dimming device attached to motor-cars.

As I intimated, in reply to a parliamentary question on the 11th December, 1951, the desirability of making the use of the dimming device compulsory has been examined and it was found that the universal enforcement of such a requirement would be undesirable in certain circumstances and impracticable in most cases. What is required is a greater awareness by all drivers of the general benefit that could be secured by the extension of all forms of good road behaviour, including the use of dimming devices.

I understand that the Garda Síochána consider that they already possess adequate powers to deal with persons found driving without reasonable consideration.

Can the Minister say why the general use of it is considered undesirable.

I can give the Deputy my own experience. Sometimes by using the dimming device you can find yourself in trouble just as easily as by not using it.
