Vol. 143 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cork Workers' Wages.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will indicate the wages paid to workers by the Cork Corporation and Cork County Council employed on roads on corporation housing schemes and other roads, part of which are serviced by each of the above authorities; and if, in view of the great discrepancy in wages, he will sanction the further increase of 3/6 per week differential recently passed by Cork County Council.

According to the latest returns available in my Department, labourers employed by Cork Corporation are paid a weekly rate varying from £6 11s. 2d. to £6 15s. 6d. and labourers employed by the Cork County Council in an area contiguous to the county borough a rate of £4 8s. 6d. My Department has been in correspondence with the county manager regarding his proposal for an increase in the latter rate and, following information recently received, I intend to sanction the proposal.
