Vol. 144 No. 1

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Publicity for County Donegal.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that County Donegal, on account of its handcrafts, cottage industries and scenic beauty, is regarded by our diplomatic and consular representatives abroad, as the best dollar earning county in the Republic; and, if so, if he will explain the attitude of An Bord Fáilte in omitting proper and adequate publicity for the county in its publicity campaign; and, further, in neglecting to bring foreign travel and advertising agents to County Donegal during the course of their conducted tours of the country.

The conduct of tourist publicity is the responsibility of the board of Fógra Fáilte and I do not interfere with the board's discretion in matters of detail. I am satisfied, however, that there is no foundation for the allegation that County Donegal is not receiving proper and adequate attention in the board's publicity campaign.

As regards the final part of the question I would refer the Deputy to the reply which I gave to a question on the same subject by Deputy Blaney on 29th October, 1953.

As this House provides the funds with which An Bord Fáilte operates, surely the House should have some say in the directions in which they spend the fund; and further, arising out of the Minister's statement, is he aware that practically every association connected with tourism in County Donegal has protested against the inadequacy of the publicity which the county is receiving?

There are six publications by An Bord Fáilte relating to County Donegal at present in circulation.

I am afraid some other county must hold the joker.
