Vol. 144 No. 1

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Advertising of Tourist Attractions.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will ensure that An Bord Fáilte concentrate more on advertising Ireland's tourist attractions in England, Scotland, Wales and the six North-Eastern Counties, with particular emphasis on the extension of the tourist season from June to September, and thus endeavour to benefit the smaller Irish seaside resorts which are mainly dependent on those countries for their tourist revenue.

Tourist publicity is the responsibility of Fógra Fáilte and I see no reason to interfere with their discreation in the matter. I am satisfied that the board fully appreciate the value to the tourist industry of advertising in the areas mentioned by the Deputy and the desirability of taking measures to attract the maximum number of visitors from these areas during the spring and autumn months.

Is the Minister aware that the seaside resorts of County Donegal, Buncrana, Dunfanaghy and Bundoran depend entirely on the Six Counties and English and Scottish visitors for their tourist trade and will he ensure that the board give sufficient publicity in the localities from which these tourists come to these seaside resorts of this county?

I am sure that idea has occurred to the board also.

Well, they do not display it very much.
