Vol. 144 No. 1

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Repair of River Embankments—County Kerry.

asked the Minister for Lands whether he is aware of the necessity for repairing the river embankments on the Wrenn estate, Castlemaine, County Kerry; and, if so, if the Land Commission will allocate the necessary grant for the carrying out of the work.

The Land Commission, although they have no liability for the repair or maintenance of the embankments on the Wrenn estate, have recently had the works inspected. It has been ascertained that considerable damage has been caused to the embankments and drains in Brackhill and Ballymacandy by cattle trespass, and the matter is under consideration.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state the total sum of money allocated by the Land Commission for the years 1948 to 1954, for the repair of the breaches in the River Maine embankments; and the amount of the local contributions during the same years to supplement the State grants.

The expenditure sanctioned by the Land Commission from the 1st January, 1948, to the present date for the repair of embankments on estates in the catchment area of the River Maine amounts to £52,895, towards which the benefiting occupiers contributed £2,486 by means of repayable advances charged on their holdings, cash payments and free labour. Sums totalling £1,550 were recouped out of the income from maintenance trust funds established on the sale of certain of the affected estates by the former landlords. The balance of the expenditure, viz., £48,859, was provided by the Land Commission by means of free grants.
