Vol. 144 No. 1

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Use of Irish Official Forms.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware that many teachers and pupils have adopted the simplifications of Irish declensions, conjugations and grammatical rules, which have been recommended by the Government Translation Office and are on sale in book form by the Stationery Office to the public; and if he will take steps to ensure that in examinations under his Department, candidates using the forms in official use will not be at any disadvantage in the marking, as against candidates adhering to the old grammatical usages.

I take it that the Deputy refers to Gramadach na Gaeilge, Caighdeán Rannóg an Aistriúcháin, published by the Stationery Office in July, 1953. I am not aware that many teachers and pupils have adopted the simplification referred to.

It is stated in the introduction to this booklet that the proposals made therein for a revised standard of grammar were being issued to the public so that observations on them might be forthcoming before they would be formally adopted for the official work of the Translation Office.

It is not, therefore, correct to state that the proposals were recommended and in the circumstances there is no question yet of the contents of the booklet being accepted as authoritative.
