Vol. 144 No. 1

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Laoighis Water Supplies.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state the number of applications submitted to the Laoighis County Council for (1) the provision of pumps, and (2) the extension of existing water supplies up to 31st December, 1953, the number sanctioned for the present and coming financial years and the total estimated cost thereof; also the number of applications rejected or postponed and the estimated cost of these.

It has been ascertained from the local authority that to date 23 applications were submitted for the provision of pumps and three for extensions of water supplies. Their programme for the present financial year under these heads comprises 13 pumps and three extensions. In the coming financial year it is hoped to provide approximately eight pumps and two water fountains. The cost of pumps is being met from revenue and during the coming year the provision proposed for pumps is £1,000 plus any balance remaining unexpended from the year 1953-54. It is anticipated that the county council will submit a proposal to raise loans to meet the cost of the extensions and will provide in their estimates a sum to meet the loan charges.

I am informed that the county council have deferred consideration of 13 applications for the provision of new pumps estimated to cost about £3,500.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state (1) if repeated applications for the provision of a suitable water supply or pump were submitted to his Department and the Laoighis County Council since 1951 for 55 persons living on Carlow Road, Ballylinan, County Laoighis; (2) the dates when the last reports were submitted to the county council and his Department concerning the matter; (3) the cause of the delay in providing this essential service for the occupants of 11 houses, and (4) when the service will be made available.

The only complaint received in my Department was from a resident of Carlow Road, Ballylinan, last May, as to the inadequacy of the water supply in the Sheffield district. The matter was taken up with the sanitary authority who reported that arrangements were being made for the provision of a pump to serve this district. This pump has since been provided.

I have no information that further pumps are needed in the area.
