Vol. 144 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Protection of Egg Producers.

Mr. O'Higgins

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether, in view of his recent statement that the producers of eggs were being exploited, he will indicate what steps he proposes to take to protect these producers from the continued exploitation of which he complained.

I am having a close watch kept on the egg markets, and suitable action has been taken in certain cases where it has been found that producers were being paid less than the market value of their eggs. I have also made arrangements for the issue to the daily newspapers of up-to-date information regarding egg supplies and prices on the British markets so that producers here may be guided in selling their eggs to the best advantage.

Arising out of this question, would I be in order now in asking what an economic price would be for the producers of eggs?

It depends on a number of factors about which I have not got information at my disposal.

It does not arise out of the question.

I am just trying to get an indication from the Parliamentary Secretary.
