Vol. 144 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Pig Prices.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware that pig prices have fallen very considerably in the past two months; and, if so, if he will state what steps he proposes to take to remedy this matter.

The answer to the first part of the question is in the negative. The prices paid to producers for pigs have fallen only by a relatively small amount during the past two months and the prices of pig feed have also decreased in recent weeks. Reductions in the prices for exports of pigmeat to Britain have necessarily followed, under the Pigs and Bacon Agreement with the Ministry of Food, reductions made in the prices for British home-produced pigs.
