Vol. 144 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sheep Transport by C.I.E.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that C.I.E. are unable to quote an economic price for the transport of sheep at present because of the fact that they have no fitments to render their wagons double decked when transporting sheep and that as a result most of the transport of sheep has to be done by lorry even for such long distances as from Kerry to Northern Ireland; and, if so, whether, in view of the importance of the provision of such fitments both from the point of view of the sheep farmers of the country and of the economic operation of C.I.E., he will take steps to have this matter dealt with immediately.

The question of the provision of fittings for wagons to render them double decked for the transport of sheep would be a matter of day-to-day administration for the board of C.I.E., and I have no function in the matter. I understand, however, that the board has under consideration the practicability or otherwise of constructing wagons of a special type to give larger loading of sheep.
