Vol. 144 No. 5

- County Cork Postal Deliveries.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will state whether arrangements were made a few years ago for the introduction of a daily postal delivery service in the Newcestown - Castletown - Enniskean area of the Bandon, County Cork, postal district; and, if so, if he will indicate the present position in the matter.

Mr. Boland

On the inauguration of the scheme for affording increased frequency of delivery generally throughout the country preliminary proposals to provide this facility were prepared by postmasters. Those prepared for the Bandon head office district were found to be expensive and in some respects unsuitable, and further consideration of them had to be deferred until they could be examined on the spot by headquarters officers.

The Bandon district is one of a number which I have arranged will be examined this year and it is hoped to provide daily delivery in all areas, including those mentioned by the Deputy.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware that the practice, which has been in operation for at least 40 years, of providing an outgoing postal service from Crosshaven, County Cork, on Sunday evenings, has been discontinued recently; and, if so, if he will now have this service reintroduced.

Mr. Boland

The Sunday evening dispatch of letters from Crosshaven was discontinued as from 19th July, 1953, because the number of letters available did not warrant the expense involved. An early morning dispatch on Monday was provided instead. In the circumstances I do not propose to reintroduce the Sunday evening service.
