Vol. 144 No. 7

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Ground Limestone Subsidy.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if instructions were issued from his Department prohibiting county committees of agriculture from paying a subsidy on ground limestone; and, if so, if he will state the year in which such instructions were issued.

Mr. Walsh

My Department informed the committees of agriculture on the 21st December, 1948, that the continuance by the committees after the 31st December, 1948, of a scheme for subsidising the distribution of ground limestone would not be approved.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if representations were made to his Department by the E.C.A. representative here to have a subsidy paid on the transport of ground limestone; and, if so, if he will state what the nature of those representations was, when they were made and what the reply to the representations was.

Mr. Walsh

It is not the practice to disclose details of communications exchanged with official representatives of foreign Governments without their consent.

Can the Minister state if, in this particular case, the then Minister for Agriculture, Deputy Dillon, had to be kicked into giving a subsidy?

Mr. Walsh

I am so aware.

Who gave him the kick?

Mr. Walsh

He got the boot.
