Vol. 144 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Castleisland Insemination Station.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if, in view of the fact that he gave an assurance to a deputation which he received in Tralee about two years ago from the Waterville district that the services of Shorthorn and Hereford bulls from the insemination station in Castleisland would be made available to farmers in that area and in view of the fact that applications for such services have been refused by his Department he will now state the position in regard to this matter.

Mr. Walsh

It is proposed to make available Shorthorn inseminations during the coming season through the substation at Cahirciveen attached to the main insemination station at Castleisland, both of which are operated by the Dairy Disposal Company, and my Department will clear with the company before the end of this month the arrangements under which such inseminations will be made available. I am advised, however, that making Hereford inseminations available in the Kerry cattle area raises special breeding issues and I will communicate shortly with the Deputy when I have considered these.
