Vol. 144 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Storage of Irish Creamery Butter.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state how he proposes to finance the cold storage of Irish creamery butter this year in view of the fact that the profit on the sale of imported butter at 4/2 per lb., which he stated that he intended to use for this purpose, will now be reduced considerably by the sale of the butter at 3/10 per lb.

Mr. Walsh

It was my original intention, as I stated in the House on 18th March, 1953, that payments during the current financial year in respect of the cold storage of creamery butter would be made exclusively out of the Dairy Produce (Price Stabilisation) Fund, on the assumption that the fund would be in a position to meet all these payments from profits on the sale of imported butter at the retail price of 4/2 per lb. The position has, however, since considerably altered because the profits on imported butter are being reduced by 4d. per lb., as mentioned by the Deputy, and, moreover, the fund has been called upon to bear the costs of increases in retailers' and wholesalers' profit margins on creamery butter which were introduced as from 1st October last. Accordingly, payments in the current financial year in respect of creamery butter cold storage are now being made partly out of the fund and partly out of sub-head P of my Department's Vote.

Go bhfoiridh Dia orainn. You are in a bad way, God help you.
