Vol. 144 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Duty on Fertiliser Imports.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the amount of duty collected during the 12 months from 1st January, 1953, to 31st December, 1953, on imported superphosphate, ground phosphates, granulated phosphates and compound manures containing phosphates.

The only duty on fertilisers is that mentioned at Tariff Reference No. 245 which applies to superphosphates, ground mineral phosphates and compound manures which, if not of British Common wealth origin, are chargeable with customs duty at the rate of 20 per cent. ad valorem. Such fertilisers, if produced in and consigned from British Commonwealth countries, are not chargeable with duty.

In the calendar year 1953 the net receipt of duty, which was derived solely from imported superphosphates, was £11,513 17s. 6d.
