Vol. 144 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Seed Flax Growing.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if his Department has explored the possibility of growing seed flax for commercial purposes in the West Cork and Gaeltacht areas; and, if so, with what result.

Mr. Walsh

Numerous trials have been carried out by my Department and by instructors in agriculture in the growing of seed flax or linseed for commercial purposes. In general, the yields obtained were very variable and there was an unduly high proportion of poor crops. The position is, therefore, that the crop is not one which can be recommended for growing in this country.
