Vol. 145 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Wexford Lands.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state when the Land Commission propose to divide the land at Galbally, Enniscorthy, County Wexford, amongt small-holders and landless men.

It is not possible at present to state when the lands in possession of the Land Commission in the townland of Galbally can be allotted but there will be no avoidable delay.

Is it a good policy for the Land Commission to take over farms and let them by conacre instead of giving them to the people who are waiting for land in the area?

If that were the policy of the Land Commission I would say it would not be a good one, but it is not the policy.

It is the practice.

It is not.

It was published in the local paper.

Possession of one of the estates in question was only taken on the 16th October, 1953. It comprises 259 acres 1 rood and 12 perches. The Deputy will realise that it takes a certain amount of time to prepare a scheme, to submit it to the commissioners and, when it has been approved by the commissioners, to get houses built or have whatever improvements that are necessary made before it can be put into operation. I am sure he will recognise if he is familiar with the procedure that it would have been impossible to put it into operation in the present spring season. In fact, however, I do not think there will be any great loss locally because any lettings that have been made are to locals and I understand it is locals also who will benefit from the scheme when this division takes place.
