Vol. 145 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Wexford Stationing of Troops.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will consider having troops stationed at the old fort, Duncannon, County Wexford, which is at present lying vacant and causing concern to the ratepayers of County Wexford.

It is not proposed to have troops stationed at Fort Duncannon.

This fort was taken over during the emergency and troops were stationed in it. A lot of money was spent on it installing bathrooms, toilets, and so on, and it is lying there as a white elephant. I think it would be a good policy to have troops stationed there because it would give more encouragement to young men to join the Army whose objection is that they are sent to the Curragh where there is nothing but plains and sheep to be seen. This fort is a waste of money and a burden on the rates as well.
