Vol. 145 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Passenger Movements.

asked the Taoiseach if he will give particulars for the year 1953 of the number of persons (1) entering and (2) leaving the State, together with the balance of passenger movements, by (a) sea, (b) rail, (c) air and (d) road.

It is not possible to state the total number of persons who entered the State and left the State in 1953. The total inward passenger movement by sea, rail, air (excluding transit traffic) and road (motor omnibus service only) in that year was 2,048,162 while the outward passenger movement by the same modes of travel in the year was 2,068,105. In 1953 the balance of passenger movement by sea was 31,113 outward, by rail it was 3,502 inward, by air (excluding transit traffic) it was 3,022 outward and by road (motor omnibus service only) it was 10,690 inward.

Could the Parliamentary Secretary say what the total is?

The pluses and minuses, is it?

Twenty-six thousand.*

*Later the Parliamentary Secretary made the following correction:—I gave an incorrect calculation. I said 26,000. The actual figure is 19,943.
