Vol. 145 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Import Duty on Coal.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state in regard to the import duty recently imposed on coal imported from countries other than Great Britain (1) the date on which this duty was imposed; (2) the amount of the duty, and (3) the reason for its imposition.

The customs duty on coal imported from countries other than Britain and Canada came into effect on 19th May, 1938. The amount of the duty is 3/- a ton and it was imposed in consequence of Article 16 of the agreement concluded with Britain in 1938. It has, however, been suspended since March, 1947 with the consent of the British Government, and will remain suspended until 1st April, 1954.
