Vol. 145 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Land Commission Lettings.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will indicate, in respect of lands in the hands of the Land Commission, the acreage let for (a) grazing and (b) tillage purposes during the 12 months ended 31st December, 1953.

Mr. Lynch

On estates dealt with under Land Acts, 1923-53, the total areas let for grazing and tillage during the period in question are 25,182 acres and 3,140 acres respectively.

Can the Parliamentary Secretary reconcile those figures with the protestations of his Party concerning increased tillage and soil cultivation?

Let the Deputy go around and have a look for himself.

Mr. Lynch

The Deputy keeps his eyes closed when he is travelling around.

Was the figure for grazing 25,000 acres?

Would the Deputy take a farm?

Deductions from answers given cannot be put.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary further aware that in the County Galway there is a desperate need for land for conacre purposes and that the Land Commission will not facilitate or satisfy that?

Mr. Lynch

I have no knowledge of what the position is.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware whether all that land is grazing land or forestry?

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state the amounts received by the Land Commission during the 12 months ended 31st December, 1953, in respect of lands in their hands and left for (a) grazing and (b) tillage purposes.

Mr. Lynch

The gross amounts are (a) £55,037 and (b) £14,873.
