Vol. 145 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Artificial Insemination.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if his attention has been drawn to an article in a publication condemning artificial insemination for cattle and if he will give his Department's views on the matter.

Mr. Walsh

I have seen the article referred to by the Deputy. The writer's views do not accord with the weight of informed knowledge and experience in very many countries, which is that the operation of artificial insemination in accordance with appropriate conditions is a valuable asset in enabling the widespread and profitable use of high-class breeding sires for improving the general standard and productivity of live stock as well as in combating animal diseases frequently transmitted through natural mating.

Is the Minister aware that this propaganda circulated by vested interests is having a deleterious effect on stations throughout the country?

Mr. Walsh

I have no evidence that it has any effect.
