Vol. 145 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Appointment of Medical Officer.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state what place in the order of merit did (a) a candidate from Ard-more and (b) a candidate from Killarney get as a result of the recent interview with a medical board selected by the Local Appointments Commission to inquire into the various candidates' qualifications, experience and suitability as distinct from their knowledge of the Irish language, in connection with the appointment of a medical officer to the Killarney No. 2 dispensary district.

It is not the practice to make public information of this nature and consequently I regret that I cannot supply it.

Arising out of that reply, could the Taoiseach even state if an appointment has been made or, at least, if a candidate has been recommended for the position?

What happens in these cases is that there is a recommendation to the local body.

Is it a fact that in this case a doctor with the highest qualification possible, having M.D. and L.M. degrees, plus 18 years' experience, has been passed over even though he has been doing dispensary duty helping his father in that district for the past 18 years? He has also been doing similar duty in the district hospital and the county home in Killarney. For what reason has he been passed over in favour of a doctor with five years' experience and not even the same qualifications?

The Appointments Commissioners, in accordance with law, carried out their duty.
