Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Government's British Securities.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the total amount of British securities held by all the Government Departments at 31st December, 1953, and at the latest available date during the quarter ending 31st March, 1954.

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 32 and 34 together.

The information sought by the Deputies is not available, as the returns of British Government securities held by Government Departments are furnished only annually after the close of each financial year. The returns for the financial year ended 31st March, 1954, are at present being compiled.

In the meantime, it may be of interest to the Deputies to know that the nominal amount of British Government securities held by Government Departments at the end of each of the financial years 1946-47 to 1952-53 was:—

1946-47

£49,428,000

1947-48
