Vol. 145 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Excise Duty on Stout.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the amount of excise duty paid to the Revenue Commissioners on one barrel of Guinness extra stout.

I cannot disclose such information in relation to the product of an individual trader.

Could the Minister say if it is a standard barrel of 36 gallons that Messrs. Guinness trade in?

I do not know what they trade in.

There is no State secret in that.

The rate of duty on a standard barrel of 36 gallons of beer brewed at an original gravity of 1055 degrees is £9 13s. per standard barrel.

Is the Minister aware that Messers. Guinness supply firkins which normally consist of a quarter barrel or eight gallons and that there is an Order by the Government that any corporation inspector of weights and measures or any Garda sergeant carrying out investigations is forbidden to check these?

The Deputy has not asked that question and I am not aware of it.

I am giving you the information.

I question the Deputy's information.
