Vol. 145 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Kerry Telephone Facilities.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware of the necessity for the provision of telephone facilities at the Lodge, Gerahmeen, Beaufort, County Kerry, which is within the precincts of the National Park on the head of the Upper Lake; and, if so, if he will make the necessary arrangements with the Department of Posts and Telegraphs to have a telephone service installed for the benefit of tourists and local residents.

I am advised that the requirements of the Bourn-Vincent Memorial Park would not justify the cost of installing and maintaining a telephone at Gerahmeen. I have no responsibility for the provision of a public telephone service.

Is it not a fact that this area forms portion of the National Park and that therefore the application should come from the Board of Works? Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that An Bord Fáilte will accept the responsibility for the expense of installing a telephone if the application is made by the Board of Works?

The commissioners have no responsibility for the provision of a telephone for those for whom admission is free.

It will cost them nothing to make the application.
