Vol. 145 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Cavan Afforestation Scheme.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that the services of certain men who have been employed on the afforestation scheme at Burren, Blacklion, have been dispensed with and, if so, if he will state (1) what the factors governing the decision to let these men go were; (2) on whose authority they were let go; (3) whether the question of seniority in length of service was taken into consideration in deciding who should be let go, and (4) whether representations were received, and, if so, from whom, on behalf of any individual or individuals engaged on this work prior to the making of a decision as to who should be retained.

I am aware that there has been a reduction in the number of men employed at Burren property of Glenfarne forest. The information requested by the Deputy is as follows:— (1) the work to be undertaken at this property in 1954-55 would not justify retention of the peak staff employed in the initial year's work; (2) reduction in staff was directed by the headquarters of my Department; (3) length of service was taken into account in deciding who should be let go; and (4) no prior representations were received in regard to the selection of men for retention.

The Deputy will appreciate that a reduction in staff is normal after the first flush of work at a new forest property. Length of service is not the only factor determining the choice of men for retention in such cases. The suitability and conduct of the men and their domestic circumstances must also be considered. Comparative length of service is not an important factor where the whole gang has less than a year's service. I have inquired fully into the present case, and I am satisfied that the selection made was the correct one.
