Vol. 145 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Limerick Housing.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state the present housing needs of Kilmeedy village and the present position in regard to a proposal to have houses erected to satisfy these needs.

I understand that six houses are required to meet the present housing needs of Kilmeedy village. The Limerick County Council proposed to acquire three sites compulsorily to accommodate these houses but the sites were excluded from the Compulsory Purchase Order (No. 1), 1952, on the grounds of hardship on the owners. I am informed that the council are at present endeavouring to secure alternative sites for the houses.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state the present housing needs of Rathkeale and the present position in regard to a proposal for the acquisition of land for housing purposes in Rathkeale to satisfy these housing needs.

I have no precise information as to the present housing needs of Rathkeale as the needs have, I understand, been met to some extent by housing operations in the adjoining rural areas. As regards housing in the town itself, efforts made in 1952 to acquire sites for 24 houses were not successful. Subsequently a site was acquired by agreement and plans are being prepared for the erection of approximately ten houses on it. Negotiations are in progress for the acquisition of an additional plot which will allow the erection of a further six houses.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state (1) the present housing needs of Mount Collins village; (2) the steps taken to date to satisfy these needs, and (3) the date on which the local authority first sent to his Department (a) a report on these housing needs; (b) proposals in regard to the acquisition of land as a housing site for this village; (c) the contract documents for the proposed scheme.

I am informed by the Limerick County Council that five cottages are needed to meet the present housing requirements of Mount Collins village. Details in regard to the housing needs of the village and proposals for the acquisition of a site were received in the Department on 26th February, 1954, and were approved on 16th March, 1954. Plans were received in the Department on the 9th instant and are at present under consideration. Contract documents have not yet been prepared for the scheme.
