Vol. 145 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Arranmore Island Roads.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware of the lack of public roads and the deplorable condition of what roads there are on the island of Arranmore, County Donegal; and, if so, if he will grant a general exemption from paying road tax to all vehicles on the island.

I have no power to grant an exemption from payment of road tax in respect of mechanically-propelled vehicles used on public roads. The obligation to pay this tax is imposed by statute. The selection and execution of the road works to be carried out on the island of Arranmore are primarily matters for the Donegal County Council.

In view of the fact that these islanders on this rocky outpost are contributing to the Road Fund for years in the poor rate payable to the Donegal County Council, could the Minister not see his way to introduce even legislation for the purpose of facilitating islanders such as the Arranmore islanders and islanders all around the coast in the procurement of mechanically-propelled vehicles?

There are many people who are contributing in road tax to the Road Fund who would contend that they are not getting value for their money from the various county councils, and I am afraid a proposal of that nature would arouse very widespread discussion and demand.

I am afraid the islanders never got very much for their money.
