Vol. 145 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Industry for Ballyshannon.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if, in view of the number of unemployed in the town of Ballyshannon consequent on the completion of the Erne hydroelectric scheme, he will state what steps have been taken to provide alternative industrial employment in this locality.

Mr. Lynch

The establishment of an industry in Ballyshannon is a matter for private enterprise. Any group interested in the setting up of an industry in Ballyshannon may make application to An Foras Tionscail for assistance under the provisions of the Undeveloped Areas Act, and it may be assumed that An Foras Tionscail will give sympathetic consideration to any sound proposal.

Mr. Brennan

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that such proposals have been formulated and that a scheme has been prepared by a private group in connection with a £60,000 industry for Ballyshannon ?

In view of the fact that we are unanimous in this matter, will the Parliamentary Secretary see that the Minister now does something that will not obstruct the project ?

A Deputy

He has done it.

On the eve of the election. Deputy Breannan and I are in agreement on this—we know that he has not.

Will the Parliamentary Secretary see that the Minister will make sure that what is being done in Ballyshannon will not be like what happened in Ballina ?

Mr. Lynch

As Deputy O'Donnell is aware, the starting of an industry is primarily a matter for private enterprise, and since the private individuals referred to by Deputy Brennan are involved in the matter it would not be proper for the Minister to make any observation at this stage.

Except that it should not be chocolates and biscuits.
