Vol. 147 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - River Steamer Services.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will explore the possibility of reviving the river steamer services (1) on the rivers Suir and Barrow from Waterford to Duncannon and Dunmore East and from Waterford to New Ross, and (2) between Cappoquin and Youghal on the river Blackwater, having regard to the fact that these are among the most beautiful rivers in Ireland and have the advantage of not having any locks.

There is no proposal before me for the revival of services on the rivers Suir and Blackwater.

At my request C.I.E. are investigating the possibility of providing river services on the middle and upper Shannon. As this investigation involves many problems I do not think that in present circumstances I should ask the board to extend their investigation to other rivers.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will consider favourably a scheme for the development of the lower Shannon from Limerick to Cappagh, County Clare, in order to provide for a passenger steamer service, which would improve the tourist trade.

I am not aware of any proposal to develop the lower Shannon from Limerick to Cappagh, County Clare, in order to provide for a passenger steamer service.

At my request C.I.E. are investigating the possibility of providing river services on the middle and upper Shannon. As this investigation involves many problems I do not think that, in present circumstances, I should ask the board to extend their investigation to other areas.
