Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Recent Flooding.

andMaher asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will inquire into the severe flooding along the banks of the Shannon with a view to having assistance rendered to the very large number of persons affected.

The Parliamentary Secretary, Mr. Flanagan, has already made a survey of this area and his report is at present being considered by the Government. In addition, the chief agricultural officer in every county is and has been in touch with the Department weekly to keep the difficulties of farmers, arising from the adverse weather conditions, in each county under constant review. I hope to visit this area myself at the end of next week, when I intend to report to the Government as to whether any special measures are necessary to deal with the situation.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if, having regard to the frequent exceptional rain, storms and floods throughout the harvest season and the resultant destruction of hay, corn and potatoes, it is his intention to assist farmers who have suffered severe losses, particularly in poor congested areas, by providing other foodstuffs at substantially reduced rates to make it possible for them to tide over the coming winter and spring.

The bad weather and flooding have, undoubtedly, caused a good deal of damage to crops in certain areas, but, from the information at my disposal, I do not think the losses are as general or severe as the Deputy suggests. If the Deputy will give me particulars of any cases of distress that have come to his notice, I will carefully consider what can be done to meet the circumstances of such cases.
