Vol. 147 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fenit Harbour Facilities.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the present position in regard to the reopening of Fenit Harbour for shipping and whether he is prepared to provide the capital required for the dredging of the harbour in order to make it safe for shipping.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state whether he has yet received a report on the survey of Fenit Harbour, County Kerry, which was carried out in the early part of this year, and, if so, if it is proposed to have the harbour dredged.

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 14 and 15 together. The approved scheme of harbour improvement works has been completed at Fenit at a cost to the State of about £217,000. I have received the report of the survey recently carried out at the harbour which indicates that some dredging is necessary, but some more detailed information is still required. The question whether State assistance can be provided towards the cost of the dredging having regard to the very substantial grants already provided for Fenit, is under consideration. I expect to be able to convey a decision very shortly to the Harbour Commissioners.
