Vol. 147 No. 6

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Longford Land Acquisition.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state whether the Land Commission have considered the propriety of acquiring the lands of Derrygeel, which are the property of Mr. John Clarke, Curroale Fox, Newtowncashel, County Longford, and, if so, with what result.

Proceedings for the acquisition of this estate have been instituted but are still in the initial stages.

Is the Minister aware that this man's holding could be deemed to be an uneconomic holding? Can the Minister say what reason the Land Commission has for acquiring this holding? Is it to relieve congestion?

To relieve congestion, yes.

We have the position then that the Land Commission is acquiring something that is deemed to be an uneconomic holding, taking it from one uneconomic holder to give to another; is that the position?

That is not the case.

Would the Minister clarify the position?
