Vol. 148 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Power Station for Roscommon.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will request the E.S.B. to consider the advisability of erecting a turf-fired generating station in the Castlerea area of County Roscommon.

The possibility of erecting a turf-fired electricity generating station in the Castlerea area, County Roscommon, has already been examined. I am advised that the quantity of turf surplus to local needs which could be produced in the area would not be sufficient to provide for the operation of a generating station on a reasonably economic basis.

Is the Minister aware that a survey was carried out in that area by engineers attached to the county council, who were experienced in bog work? They have submitted an estimate of the amount of fuel available in the bogs in that area, and it is believed by them, and others concerned, that there is sufficient fuel there to warrant the setting up of a generating station. Would the Minister not reconsider this matter in view of the serious unemployment situation which will be created in the Castlerea area shortly?

Less than 18 months ago Bord na Móna examined this matter in detail, and reported that the quantity of turf was not such as would justify the setting up, near Castlerea, of a generating station. However, if the Deputy has any later information, or information which would seriously challenge the board's estimate, and sends me that information——

That estimate is based on the amount of turf actually being produced; it is not based on the actual area of bog in the Castlerea area, which if properly acquired, would make available the necessary supply of fuel. That information has since been made available.

I think the board's survey does take into consideration the possibility of turf production in bogs not yet exploited there, but some of the bogs are not considered to be quite suitable for the machine production. However, if the Deputy has any information on the matter, and sends it to me, I will have the position further considered.
