Vol. 148 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Meath Land.

asked the Minister for Lands whether he is aware that a number of County Meath farmers with less than 200 acres of land have been notified by the Land Commission that it is proposed to acquire portion of their lands for the relief of congestion, although proceedings are not being taken for the acquisition of a large estate in the area, on which very few people are employed; and, if so, whether, having regard to the uneasiness thus caused among the local farming community, he will request the Land Commission to review this matter.

It is no doubt true that the Land Commission have acquisition proceedings in respect of many estates in County Meath both above and below the 200 acre level.

In the particular case which the Deputy mentions the Land Commission did consider the acquisition of portion of the owner's lands but decided to take no action because the employment given was really adequate —amounting to 20 men in normal times apart from casual labour during busy periods.
