Vol. 148 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sugar Prices.

Mr. Lemass

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the price at which sugar is at present supplied to Irish manufacturers engaged in export business, and how this price compares with the prices paid by British and Dutch manufacturers; further, whether he is prepared to make an arrangement with Comhlucht Siúicre Éireann, Teoranta, for the supplying of sugar to exporting manufacturers at prices comparable with world prices, which will give them a fair chance of successful competition in international markets.

Sugar is supplied to all Irish manufacturers at the controlled maximum price of £59 10s. a ton, less a rebate for quantity. Under an arrangement already made with Comhlucht Siúicre Éireann, Teoranta, further rebates are allowed by the company in respect of the sugar content of goods shown to have been exported. These rebates are designed to ensure that an efficient Irish manufacturer will have a reasonable opportunity of competing successfully in international markets.

I have no information as to the prices at which sugar is supplied to Dutch manufacturers and varying conditions of sale make direct comparison with British prices impracticable.
