Vol. 148 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - West Galway Roads.

Seán Mac Eochagáin

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state what turbary in West Galway will be required (i) to provide turf for the new electricity generating station now being built at Screebe, Connemara, and (ii) for afforestation purposes; further, if he will make a general statement in the matter.

Part 1 of the question would be more properly addressed to the Minister for Industry and Commerce.

Occasionally it happens that small pockets of turbary lie in areas purchased for afforestation and in most cases these turbary areas are too small to develop economically.

It is not the practice to purchase turbary areas for afforestation purposes as generally speaking they are unsuitable for planting.

Certain small areas have been planted experimentally but it is yet too early to adjudge their progress.
