Vol. 148 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Use of Wexford Fort.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will utilise the fort at Duncannon, County Wexford, as a training centre for army personnel throughout the summer months.

I am not in a position to give a definite indication at this stage as to the future use of Fort Duncannon as a training centre. It is most unlikely, however, that the limited accommodation at the fort will be used for training purposes this year. There is more suitable accommodation elsewhere for training members of the Defence Forces throughout the summer months and only if this accommodation were overtaxed would Fort Duncannon be considered for this purpose.

Does the Parliamentary Secretary appreciate the fact that this is an up-to-date modern barracks which was thoroughly renovated during the recent war? Does he not consider it false economy not to use such up-to-date barracks?

My information is that Duncannon Fort has accommodation for approximately 180 all ranks. It has been used from time to time for small courses for short periods. The cost of opening the fort for a short period would be fairly heavy and as there is suitable accommodation for summer camp personnel (F.C.A.) in Kilkenny Barracks, Gormanston Camp and Cathal Brugha Barracks, it is proposed to utilise these places to their fullest extent. Only if accommodation in those locations were overtaxed would the establishment of an additional training centre be considered. It is most unlikely that regular or first line troops will require extra training accommodation this year but it is not possible to forecast requirements in any future year. The military authorities have, however, indicated that the fort will be used if, and when, the exigencies of the service so demand.
