Vol. 148 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Old Age Pensions.

Mr. Lemass

asked the Minister for Social Welfare whether he is aware that the Minister for Local Government was reported on 5th January, 1955, as having stated at a meeting in Dunfanaghy that the Government proposed to increase old age pensions as soon as possible, and, if so, if he will state (a) the amount of the increase on which the Government has decided, (b) the date on which it is proposed to bring it into operation, and (c) the total annual cost to the taxpayers of the proposal.

I have seen the newspaper report referred to in the question.

In accordance with its pledge the Government will make provision for an increase in old age and blind pensions. The matter is at present under active consideration and a statement will be made as soon as possible.
