Vol. 149 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Land for Forestry.

asked the Minister for Lands if the Forestry Division will consider acquiring 100 acres of the O'Connor estate at Ballymore, Goold's Cross, County Tipperary, as an addition to the State forest already in the neighbourhood.

The Department has opened negotiations for the purchase of 94 acres of this estate.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state the cause of the delay in having the cut-away woodland on the Bomford estate at Coole, Garadice, Kilcock, cleared of brushwood and briars for the purpose of furthering forestry development in that area, and, further, when work is likely to commence.

The area of cut-away woodland at Coole lies adjacent to the main block of Summerhill property of Donadea Forest and is regarded as part of that property for work-planning purposes. The area at Coole will be cleared and replanted in the normal course of development of the property as a whole.

asked the Minister for Lands if any action has been taken to have the large area of cut-away bogland at Ardenew, Longwood, County Meath, taken over for forestry purposes, and, if not, if he will state the cause of the delay in the matter.

The Department has agreed to purchase 108 acres at Tobertynan, Ardenew, County Meath, and title investigations are in progress. There are a few offers of small areas of cut-away bog adjoining the Tobertynan area with which progress may be possible if and when the Tobertynan area is acquired.

Is the Minister aware that, over a period of years, there has been a large amount of unemployment in that area? If the cut-away bogland were taken over for forestry purposes it would help to ease the unemployment position.
