Vol. 149 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Mayo Home Assistance Officer.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare whether he is aware that a person, who is unable to carry out his duties as home assistance officer through Irish, was recently appointed in a temporary capacity in the Knocknalower dispensary district, County Mayo, which is one of the most virile Gaeltacht areas in the county; and, if so, whether he approved of the appointment and if he will take immediate steps to have a qualified native speaker appointed to the position.

The post of assistance officer in the Knocknalower area was filled by the local authority on a temporary basis pending the making of a permanent appointment. My approval to such appointments is not required.

I have recently approved of the local authority's proposal to make a competent knowledge of Irish an essential qualification for the permanent post.
