Vol. 149 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Refitting of River Shannon Vessel.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether a vessel has been purchased and refitted to provide for the tourist and holiday trade on the river Shannon, and, if so, if he will state (a) where the vessel was purchased and refitted, and (b) why the refitting was not carried out in this country.

I am informed by C.I.E. that they have been negotiating for the purchase of a vessel in England intended for the operation of holiday passenger services on the Shannon.

I understand that C.I.E. were not prepared to take delivery of any vessel unless they could be assured that it was fully seaworthy for the type of traffic they had in mind. This has necessitated certain work being carried out before the sale is finalised.
