Vol. 152 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Newspaper Circulations.

asked the Minister for Finance whether any provincial newspapers in which Government advertising appears or has appeared in the last financial year, have submitted details of their circulation since his reply of 24th March, 1955, and, if so, if he will give such details; further, what provincial newspapers did not furnish circulation figures and whether any reasons were given therefor.

My reply to Deputy Larkin's question of 24th March last indicated eight provincial newspapers in respect of which circulation figures had not been furnished. Two of these newspapers — the Anglo-Celt and the Dundalk Democrat— have since suplied figures of 21,204 (certified) and 15,280 (guaranteed), respectively; none of the others has given any specific reason for not furnishing its circulation figures.

Arising out of the Minister's reply, would the Minister not consider the advisability of withdrawing Government advertising from those papers that have refused to give proof of their circulation sales?

It is rather difficult, perhaps, to judge the merit and the value received for advertising in newspapers when there are no particulars available as regards circulation. I shall, therefore, look into the matter and consider whether that should or should not be done, as suggested by the Deputy.
