Vol. 153 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Inishere Island Landing Facilities.

asked the Minister for Local Government what grants, if any, have been sanctioned for pier and landing facilities at Inishere Island, County Galway.

A grant of £11,000 has been sanctioned out of the National Development Fund (Gaeltacht Allocation) in respect of the extension of the existing main pier on Inishere, County Galway. A further grant of £2,000 has been sanctioned from the same source for the improvement of landing facilities at Corr-Áit where a new landing place is to be provided.

Would the Minister indicate how soon the work on Inishere pier will start?

It is my duty to allocate funds. It is the duty of somebody else to operate them.

I will operate there.

Can the Minister say what progress would have been made with this job if he had gone on with it when he took office and implemented the decision that was made a year and a half ago?

Progress might have been made with the pier at Inishere but nothing would have been done for Corr-Áit. I am now catering for the entire island by giving something for a new pier and also for Corr-Áit.

Is the Minister aware that he has chosen only two of the proposals that were submitted before he took office? Can he say what he proposes to do about the third one——

That is wide of the question.

I do not think that was part of the question but I can assure the Deputy that I have given grants for two landing places.

But you have done nothing for the third one, namely, Poll-na-gCaorach.

Order! Question No. 14.
