Vol. 153 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - C.I.E. Workshops.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that there is general concern that the C.I.E. workshops at Spa Road, Inchicore, are not large enough and not operated with the maximum of efficiency having regard to the board's general duty to provide the necessary transport facilities for the public, agriculture, commerce and industry; if he will ask the board to circulate to members of the House a return showing in respect of the years 1953, 1954 and 1955 to date (a) the total number of vehicles of every type built therein, (b) the number of imported vehicles delivered as ready for service that had to be overhauled at Broadstone garage before being put into service, and the total additional cost of such overhauling, (c) the total number of imported vehicles repaired therein, (d) the total number overhauled and the cost thereof, and (e) the total number scrapped, the cost thereof, and the reasons for the scrapping.

I am not aware of any general concern regarding the size and operation of the C.I.E. workshops at Spa Road, Inchicore.

The information sought by the Deputy relates to matters of detailed administration falling entirely within the province of the board of C.I.E. with whom the Deputy may communicate direct in the matter if she so desires.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will recommend to the board of C.I.E. to consider obtaining a report from foreign transport undertaking experts on improving and modernising the Spa Road workshops, Inchicore.

The improving and modernising of the workshops at Spa Road, Inchicore, is the responsibility of C.I.E. and I am informed by the board that work has commenced on the extension and improvement of the Spa Road workshops.

I am in consultation with the board regarding the question of securing the maximum economic utilisation on a long-term basis of the personnel, premises and plant available at Inchicore.
