Vol. 153 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Differential Rents System.

asked the Minister for Local Government if, in the interests of increased industrial productivity and thrift, he will make representations to local authorities (a) to exclude any moneys received by way of allowance, gift, shift rate, commission or bonus from the assessment of means for differential renting, and (b) to make deductions in respect of pension fund, natal and social insurance contributions.

As the fixing of rents under a differential rent scheme is primarily a function of the housing authority concerned, it would not be appropriate for me to intervene in the manner suggested by the Deputy. I should point out to the Deputy that I have received representations from a number of Deputies, including Deputy Alfred Byrne, Deputy Belton and Deputy Seán Dunne on the same subject. I have told them that this is primarily a matter for the housing authority and not for me.
