Vol. 153 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Road and Drainage Grants.

andO'Reilly asked the Minister for Local Government what supplementary road and drainage grants he proposes to make to county councils this year, and how the overall allocations for such purposes compare with those made last year.

andJ. Tully asked the Minister for Local Government whether he proposes to make additional grants available in the current financial year for road works and schemes under the Local Authorities (Works) Act, 1949, and, if so, if he will state the amounts of such grants and the purposes to which they are to be applied.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 38 and 39 together.

As Deputies are aware, the Road Fund improvement grants for 1955-56 notified earlier this year substantially exceeded the corresponding Road Fund grants for last year. Supplementary grants from the Road Fund amounting to £500,000 are now being notified to county councils. The primary purpose of these grants is to enable the county councils to expand their work of county road improvement during the present financial year.

The grants for Local Authorities (Works) Act schemes notified to county councils earlier this year slightly exceeded the total grants for such purposes notified to county councils during the whole of last financial year. A supplementary grant of £5,000 per county is now being made to each county council.

As a result of these supplementary grants, the total allocation in Road Fund and drainage grants to local authorities this year is in excess of that allocated last year.

Would the Minister say whether the moneys he has referred to will serve the purposes formerly served by the Tourist Roads Development Fund which has now been incorporated in the Road Fund?

I am referring to the total allocation of grants out of the Road Fund for this year.
