Vol. 153 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bus Employees' Pensions.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that approximately 100 pensioned bus drivers and conductors, who served for 40 years in the D.U.T.Co. and later in C.I.E., are receiving only 6/- a week pension; and, if so, if he will arrange for an immediate inquiry with a view to providing adequate pensions for such persons.

Under the existing contributory pension schemes C.I.E. wage grade employees who are members of the schemes may, on retirement at 65 years of age, opt for one of the following pensions: (a) £1 per week for life; (b) 30/- per week for five years, reduced to 12/- thereafter; (c) 37/6 per week for five years, reduced to 6/- thereafter. The pensioners to whom the Deputy refers no doubt opted for alternative (c).

On my initiative, the question of amending the existing superannuation schemes is at present the subject of consideration by C.I.E. who are in consultation with the trade unions catering for the employees contributing to the superannuation fund. I have already informed the unions that the question of the pensions of existing pensioners is one that should be taken up by them in the first instance with the Board of C.I.E.

Would the Minister have any idea of when the result of his efforts will be made known to the public?

I am afraid I could not say. The discussions are at present taking place between the unions and the C.I.E. Board.
