Vol. 154 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Imports and Re-exports of Copper Ingots.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state, in respect of each of the years 1947 to 1955, the tonnage of copper ingots imported through the port of Cork, and the percentage of re-exports of such ingots by water from the port of Cork, and if he will give particulars of the relative licences issued for such re-exports, and what was the final destination of such re-exports; further, if he will give details, in respect of the period mentioned, of landings of copper ingots in other ports or havens around the south coast, including Castletown-Berehaven.

As the official statistics of imports and exports are not recorded by individual ports, I am unable to give the information in the form or to the extent requested by the Deputy. The official statistics do not, in any event, include material salvaged from wrecks and temporarily imported for re-shipment abroad.

The records available in my Department show that licences for the reexport, through Cork, of copper ingot (all of which was salvaged from wrecks) were granted as follows:

1950

105 tons

1951

73,,

1953

626,,

1954

378,,

1955

80,,

Total

1,262,,

Particulars regarding the final destination of these exports are available only in respect of licences granted since the beginning of 1953. Of the 1,084 tons licensed since that time, 200 tons went to Britain and the balance to Western Germany.
